Stomach

Stomach refers to fasting.

Fasting guidelines vary between hospitals and in some cases between practitioners in the same hospital!

In general, for adult patients
  • Patients should not have eaten for 6 hours prior to elective surgery
  • Clear, non-alcoholic fluids can be consumed up until 2 hours before surgery, to avoid confusion it is easier to say water only.
  • Chewing gum is a controversial area.

  • There will be specific considerations for infants and patients receiving NG feeding.
